Assam-Arunachal: Breakthrough — Five Border Disputes Resolved

Arunachal Pradesh Home Minister Mama Natung on July 28 said the state government is committed to resolving all pending inter‑state boundary disputes through regional committees and urged residents along the Assam–Arunachal border to maintain peace and harmony. Speaking at the inauguration of a Rs 3 crore fire station in Yupia, Papum Pare district, Natung stressed the importance of cooperation between communities on both sides of the frontier and called on Assam to play a constructive role in preserving regional stability.

The minister referred to recent tensions in the Tarasso area and said boundary disputes in five districts have already been settled, while talks continue on remaining disagreements. His comments follow an incident on July 15 in Sango village (Tarasso area) when alleged arson and firing occurred between local residents and Assam forest personnel, raising fresh concerns about the disputed stretch.

The new fire station, built by the Urban Development Department, is intended to strengthen disaster preparedness and emergency response across Papum Pare. During the programme, Natung also flagged off a fleet of newly inducted vehicles to boost local capacities for firefighting and rescue operations.

According to an official statement cited by the minister, the Arunachal government has established 13 new fire stations at district headquarters over the past three years. The state also created 337 new posts in the Fire and Emergency Services Department during the same period, bringing the total number of firefighters to 811 personnel.

Natung highlighted the success of the Arunachal Pradesh Police’s anti‑narcotics campaign, Operation Dawn, saying it has produced major crackdowns on drug peddlers and trafficking networks over the past four years. He presented these security and emergency measures as part of a broader effort to reinforce law and order and community safety in the border region.

Officials say the July 15 clash began when Assam forest staff from the Behali Reserve Forest attempted to stop what they described as unauthorised construction in land Assam considers part of the reserve. Occupants allegedly opened fire; officials reported roughly 50 rounds were fired but no injuries were recorded. Assam maintains the land falls within the Behali Reserve Forest, while local residents assert long‑standing residency and ownership.

Following the incident, MLAs and officials from both sides met and agreed to maintain the status quo along the disputed boundary while discussions proceed. Natung’s message sought to combine confidence-building measures on security and emergency services with a negotiated, committee‑based approach to settling border claims.
