The flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement on Monday, but the disaster’s death toll rose to 68 after two more fatalities were reported and more than 5.24 lakh (about 524,000) people across five districts remained affected, officials said.
The latest deaths were reported from Charaideo district on Sunday, where the impact has been severe; officials said nearly 1.9 lakh (about 190,000) people in Charaideo were still dealing with inundation.
Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Sivasagar were among the other districts continuing to face flood-related disruption, authorities added.
Relief efforts are under way: 354 relief camps and distribution centres across four districts are providing shelter and assistance to 37,724 displaced people.
Rescue and relief operations involve multiple agencies, including the Army, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire and Emergency Services and the police.
Floodwaters have damaged several embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure at different locations across the state, complicating relief and rehabilitation work.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said power restoration was proceeding in phases. “As Assam steadily recovers from the floods, power restoration efforts continue across affected districts,” Sarma wrote in a social media post on Sunday. He said electricity had been temporarily suspended as a precaution and that Power Department teams were conducting safety inspections before phased restoration in Sivasagar, Jorhat, Charaideo, Dhubri, Bongaigaon and other areas.
The government said it remained committed to restoring essential services and helping affected communities return to normal life. Post-flood rehabilitation will follow without delay, with schools and damaged infrastructure to be repaired and restored in due course.
Food supplies, including rice, are being sent continuously to flood-hit areas, doctors are attending to medical needs, and essential items are being air-dropped where road access is cut off.
