Imphal, July 27 — Manipur delivered a memorable double podium at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow on Saturday as Olympic silver medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won a historic third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold in the women’s 48kg and Chanambam Rishikanta Singh claimed silver in the men’s 60kg, the latter setting a Games record in the snatch.
Mirabai, 31, dominated the 48kg event, breaking Commonwealth Games records with an 85kg snatch and a 105kg clean and jerk for a winning total of 190kg. The victory was her third straight Commonwealth gold after Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022, and raised her overall Commonwealth Games medal tally to four following a silver in Glasgow 2014. After missing an opening snatch attempt at 82kg, the Manipuri lifter recovered to deliver a commanding performance and finished 22kg clear of Nigeria’s Ruth Asuquo Nyong, who took silver with 168kg.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Mirabai on social media, calling her latest triumph “another glorious chapter in Indian weightlifting” and praising her as an inspiration to the nation for back-to-back Commonwealth Games golds and an overall fourth CWG medal.
Rishikanta, 25, added India’s second medal of the Games and the country’s first silver when he lifted a Games-record 121kg in the snatch and posted a combined total of 264kg in the men’s 60kg. A native of Ngairangbam Makha Maning Leikai in Imphal West, he is a former trainee of the National Sports Academy at Khuman Lampak and currently competes under the Indian Army’s sports programme. The Glasgow edition was his second Commonwealth Games after Birmingham 2022; he had qualified for these Games by winning gold at the 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships.
The double success sparked jubilant celebrations across Manipur, with political leaders, fellow athletes and local fans hailing Mirabai and Rishikanta for once again bringing national and state pride through weightlifting.
