The parents of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke said on July 25 in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar that the family endured “immense pressure” and even received “death threats” during the nationwide students’ agitation led by the outfit, but they expressed pride after the movement helped trigger the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Speaking to IANS, Abhijeet’s father, Bhagwanrao Dipke, said his son had his blessings and congratulated him on the apparent success of his first major campaign. “He (Abhijeet) has my blessings. His first movement has met with success; I congratulate him and hope that he continues to do good work in the future,” he said.
Bhagwanrao also thanked Dharmendra Pradhan for what he called the “right step,” noting that Pradhan “listened to the students” and referenced the need to focus on students’ education in his resignation letter. “It is a big thing,” the father added.
The elder Dipke described a period of fear for the family, saying there were “death threats coming in via YouTube” and that the threats and abuse forced them to leave home and stay away for 15 to 20 days. “People were saying all sorts of things. I was extremely anxious and terrified,” he told reporters, while asserting that his son had led the agitation “selflessly.”
Abhijeet’s mother, Anita Dipke, became emotional on hearing of the resignation, saying people had praised her son’s work but that she had been left shaken after he was attacked and slapped during the protests. “I was very scared after he was attacked and slapped. It felt terrible, and I couldn’t sleep or eat because of it,” she said.
Anita said she was proud that her son achieved success “at such a young age” and welcomed the government’s response to student demands. “It is a very good development for the students. The government has listened to their demands. I am happy that Dharmendra Pradhan resigned,” she told IANS, noting that the news coincided with the auspicious day of Ashadhi Ekadashi.
Echoing the family’s distress over safety, Anita criticised the police “lathi charge” on student protesters during the July 20 ‘Sansad Chalo’ march, asking, “They were students, who beats girls like that? Clothes were also torn.” She said the family remained cautious about travelling to Delhi and would go only when their son asked them to.
