Voices of the Land: Air India Express Docuseries on Northeast India
Air India Express has launched “Voices of the Land: Tales of Northeast,” a six-part documentary series that explores the heritage, traditions and oral histories of indigenous communities across Northeast India. Produced in collaboration with Edstead and Dentsu Sports and Entertainment, the series premiered on JioHotstar on July 3 and is hosted by actor Adarsh Gourav.
The documentary spotlights the Angami of Nagaland, the Biate and Mising communities of Assam, a community from Meghalaya and the Sherdukpen of Arunachal Pradesh. Through music, folklore, craftsmanship and everyday life, each episode documents cultural traditions and the lived experiences that shape these communities.
The series is part of Air India Express’s “Tales of India” initiative, which the airline says supports cultural and heritage projects spanning literature, art, festivals and storytelling. The carrier has also incorporated traditional Northeast art and weaving motifs into its fleet liveries, citing patterns such as Tsüngkotepsü from Nagaland; Akyobi, Saphee Lanphee and Moirang Phee from Manipur; Gamosa and Jaapi from Assam; Khneng from Meghalaya; and Puanchei from Mizoram.
Air India Express Chief Marketing Officer Siddhartha Butalia said the documentary seeks to highlight the region’s indigenous heritage and its close relationship with the natural environment. Adarsh Gourav said filming offered him a deeper view of traditional knowledge systems and communities’ long-standing ties to nature.
Simantini Ghosh, National Head of Dentsu Sports and Entertainment India, said the series was conceived to bring lesser-known indigenous stories to a wider audience through the airline’s growing regional presence. Edstead founder Shekhar Bhattacharjee added that the project aims to showcase voices and traditions that have received limited mainstream attention.
Air India Express currently operates more than 290 weekly flights from Agartala, Dibrugarh, Dimapur, Guwahati and Imphal. The airline has also announced its first direct international services from the Northeast, with flights from Guwahati to Abu Dhabi and Dubai scheduled to commence in August.
