Severe erosion by the Brahmaputra has worsened conditions in Satbhendi village in Jaleswar, Goalpara district, as rising river levels wash away large stretches of agricultural land and put the nearby embankment at risk, residents say. Locals report that several bighas (local land units) of standing jute are slipping into the river each day, forcing farmers to harvest prematurely to salvage what they can.
Farmers described hurried, early harvesting of jute before full maturity to reduce losses, a move that cuts yields and income. With crop being lost daily to the river, households that depend on the jute harvest for their livelihood face mounting financial pressure.
Erosion in the Jaleswar area is not new, residents say, but they allege that repeated incidents have not prompted timely or effective action from the Water Resources Department or elected representatives. According to locals, past warnings and appeals for protection measures remain largely unaddressed.
The situation has become especially alarming because the embankment lies barely 100 metres from the active erosion front, residents warned. They said that if urgent preventive work is not carried out, the embankment itself could be compromised, exposing nearby villages, roads and farmland to far greater damage.
Community members have urged the government and the Water Resources Department to implement permanent erosion-control measures immediately, calling for both structural protection and long-term solutions to stabilise the riverbank. They say delays could lead to extensive, irreversible losses of agricultural land, infrastructure and homes in the coming days.
Riverbank communities living along the Brahmaputra described growing fear and uncertainty as they watch land, crops and livelihoods disappear. They are appealing for fast, decisive action to prevent the crisis from deepening.
