Guwahati Alert: Cops Seize Rs 5-Lakh Foreign Liquor in Sribhumi
Patharkandi police in Assam’s Sribhumi district seized foreign liquor worth more than Rs 5 lakh and arrested the driver after discovering the consignment concealed beneath cartons of eggs during a late-night naka (checkpoint) operation on Sunday. The seizure and arrest followed a tip-off to local officers.
A police team led by Patharkandi officer-in-charge Bishwajyoti Deuri intercepted a pick-up vehicle at Moina, within the police station limits. The truck appeared to be carrying only egg cartons, but a detailed search revealed 59 cartons of foreign liquor hidden under the egg consignment.
Police said the liquor was allegedly being moved to Mizoram, with egg cartons used as camouflage to evade detection at checkpoints. The driver was taken into custody at the scene, and both the vehicle and the liquor shipment were seized.
Investigators are questioning the accused to identify other members of the smuggling network, trace the source of the contraband and confirm its intended destination. Authorities indicated further arrests are likely as inquiries continue.
The operation highlights ongoing efforts by Assam police to curb cross-border smuggling of illegal liquor, using targeted naka checks and intelligence-led interceptions to disrupt supply routes and prevent unlawful distribution.
