Arunachal Landslide Blocks River Near Likabali — Flood Risk
Torrential rains continued to batter several parts of Arunachal Pradesh, causing landslides, flash floods and widespread infrastructure damage across multiple districts and prompting ongoing rescue and restoration operations. Authorities warned of immediate danger to downstream communities after a major landslide at Siji block point in Lower Siang district blocked the Siji River above the Likabali checkpost between Siji and Magi, causing water to accumulate upstream with a risk of sudden release that could threaten life and property.
District police teams have begun outreach to downstream settlements, urging residents to stay away from riverbanks and remain vigilant as the situation evolves. In a separate incident, extreme weather caused a bridge collapse at Ledum village, further cutting connectivity and complicating relief efforts in the affected area.
Officials said several districts reported flash floods, road failures and rockfalls, with reports of fatalities and some people missing; formal casualty figures have not been released in the initial reports. Rescue teams, emergency personnel and heavy machinery are being deployed on a war footing to clear debris, search for victims and restore traffic where possible.
Continuous rainfall, however, has kept conditions volatile: sudden landslides, rockfalls and road subsidence are occurring frequently, creating hazardous conditions for commuters and responders. District administrations have issued advisories asking the public to avoid non-essential travel until conditions improve and normal movement is restored.
Those who must travel for essential reasons are being told to move only during daylight hours, exercise heightened caution through vulnerable stretches, and strictly follow directions from highway officials, police and emergency restoration teams. Motorists are specifically warned not to stop or park in landslide-prone zones, rockfall areas or sections affected by road breaches.
