E20 Fuel: Govt Confirms Vehicle Insurance Remains Valid
New Delhi, June 16: The government on Tuesday dismissed social media claims that using E20 ethanol-blended petrol could lead to the rejection of vehicle insurance claims. In a post on X, the PIB Fact Check unit called the allegation “fake” and clarified that motor insurance policies remain valid for vehicles that use E20 fuel.
The clarification followed several posts suggesting motorists might face problems obtaining coverage or settling claims if they refuelled with E20. The PIB rejected those assertions and said there is no impact on the validity of motor insurance policies due to E20 use.
The fact-checking unit urged the public to verify such information through official sources before sharing or acting on it, and appealed to people to report suspicious or misleading content to help curb misinformation.
For wider context, a recent KPMG in India report noted that the country’s ethanol blending programme has reached significant scale, with E20 now operational across the nation. The report examined opportunities and challenges as India moves beyond E20, including feedstock availability, supply-chain efficiency, infrastructure readiness and alignment of policy measures.
The government has been promoting ethanol-blended petrol to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, improve energy security and support environmental goals. Earlier in June, on World Environment Day 2026, E85 fuel was launched at an IndianOil retail outlet as the first phase of a broader rollout. E85 is currently available at 48 public-sector retail outlets, with plans to expand to 500 outlets by December 2026 and about 5,000 by December 2027.
