লণ্ডনত সত্ৰীয়াৰ গৌৰৱ: অসমীয়াৰ অবিস্মৰণীয় নৃত্য
In London, Auniati Satra’s Sattradhikar, Dr. Pitambar Dev Goswami, visited the British Museum to view the Vrindavani Vastra, the sixteenth‑century woven cloth that chronicles Krishna’s lila and stands as a seminal artefact of Assamese Vaishnavite culture. Accompanied by Dr. Jayanta Biswa Sharma — elder brother of Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma — and expatriate Assamese Chinu Kishore, Dr. Goswami described the moment as historic and deeply moving. He is scheduled to address the British Parliament on 17 June as part of a programme highlighting Assam’s spiritual and cultural heritage.
The Vrindavani Vastra, created under the direct supervision of Srimanta Sankardev in the 1500s, is a narrative textile whose threads depict episodes from Krishna’s life and the beauty of Vaikuntha. Now preserved in the British Museum’s collections, the cloth is displayed under glass; observers say its colours and motifs still convey the sacred touch and artistic mastery of its makers, and that it embodies an irreplaceable chapter of Assam’s cultural identity.
Standing before the textile in London, Dr. Goswami became visibly emotional, stressing that the Vrindavani Vastra is far more than a piece of fabric — it represents the soul of Assam and the enduring creative legacy of the guru tradition. The delegation’s visit drew attention to the ways in which regional devotional art has entered global museum narratives.
For the first time, the sound of Sattriya culture will be heard inside the British Parliament. On 17 June, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Committee Room 15 will host an event titled “Assam’s Vaishnavite Culture,” organised at the initiative of MP Bob Blackman. Dr. Pitambar Dev Goswami will be the keynote speaker, presenting the history and living traditions of Assam’s satra institutions to an international audience.
As a gesture of hospitality and cultural exchange, Dr. Goswami presented sweets from Majuli to a senior official of the British Museum and to representatives of the British government — a symbolic offering that organisers say underlines Assamese warmth and the community’s desire to share its heritage with the world.
