Urgent: Delhi Demolition Sweep: 60 Inspected, 23 Demolished, 6 Sealed
The Delhi government stepped up its crackdown on illegal constructions on Wednesday, inspecting 60 properties across the city while the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) demolished 23 structures and sealed six establishments, officials said. The intensified drive follows a deadly fire at an unauthorised bed-and-breakfast in Hauz Rani, South Delhi, that killed 22 people and has focused enforcement on fire safety and building violations. According to the Revenue Department, 577 properties were inspected between June 5 and June 10 as part of coordinated sealing, demolition and eviction actions with civic agencies.
The Revenue Department’s daily report said the MCD issued 44 show-cause notices for unauthorised construction, two sealing show-cause notices and three demolition orders during the most recent actions. Officials added that between June 1 and June 10 the MCD demolished 163 properties and sealed 205 establishments citywide. Over the same period the corporation issued 190 unauthorised-construction show-cause notices, 129 sealing show-cause notices and 67 demolition orders.
Enforcement activity was reported across multiple districts. In South Delhi, authorities issued eight show-cause notices and carried out inspections at two other sites. In the Outer North district one property was demolished and inspection reports for three additional sites were forwarded to the MCD and the fire department for follow-up. In the North district officials recorded 11 restraining orders and notices, including a show-cause notice for a building in Old Delhi’s Sadar Bazar. The South-West district has scheduled demolitions for three buildings in the coming week, while the North-East district saw show-cause notices served on several banquet halls, a guest house and commercial units for alleged fire-safety and building-code violations. Notices were also issued in Central and West districts.
Inspectors flagged repeated violations at commercial establishments, including unauthorised construction, excess floors, absence of sanctioned plans, missing fire clearances and overall deficiencies in fire-preparedness. A demolition drive in Saidulajab, South Delhi, proceeded under heavy police deployment; a senior police officer said, “We have deployed two teams and paramilitary forces to maintain law and order. So far, no resistance has been witnessed.”
The stepped-up campaign follows a recent collapse of a multi-storey building housing a coaching centre in Saidulajab that killed six people. Delhi authorities, including the Delhi Development Authority and the MCD, say demolition and sealing operations will continue citywide, supported by an ongoing survey to identify illegal commercial and residential constructions and enforcement under the Master Plan-2021, the Unified Building Bye-Laws-2016 and the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957.
