India Eyes Canadian Crude Imports: Game-Changing Energy Deal
India is exploring the possibility of sourcing crude oil from Canada, with Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Patnaik saying at the Global Energy Show in Calgary that the country’s newer refineries are capable of processing the heavier crude grades produced in Canada. Patnaik added that officials from both countries have been holding regular discussions to strengthen energy cooperation, including potential crude supplies, though he warned that global investors remain cautious about Canada’s regulatory and project approval processes, which could affect the pace of any deals.
India, still highly dependent on imported oil, has been steadily diversifying its supplier base across West Asia, Russia, the United States and Latin America. Industry observers note that Canadian output-much of it from oil sands-is typically heavier and more sulfurous than many conventional crudes, requiring more complex refining. Over recent years, however, several Indian refineries have upgraded their units and flexibility to handle a broader mix of crude grades, improving the technical case for Canadian crude imports.
Energy diversification has become a strategic priority for New Delhi amid volatile global oil prices and shifting geopolitical dynamics that can disrupt traditional supply routes. Securing additional sources could help India spread risk and strengthen long-term energy security.
In a related development, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company said its international arm, XRG, is evaluating opportunities in Canada’s upstream oil sector and in liquefied natural gas projects, reflecting growing international interest in Canadian resources. Canada remains a major global producer of oil and gas with significant reserves in its western provinces; most of its exports currently go to the United States, but discussions about expanding access to Asian markets have intensified in recent years.
Both governments continue talks, but timing and scale of any Canadian crude shipments to India remain uncertain as commercial and regulatory issues are worked through.
