Staggering BJP Surge: Vote Share 2% (1985) to 48%+ (2026)
MANGALDAI, June 8 — Dilip Saikia, Assam BJP president and MP from the Darrang–Udalguri Lok Sabha constituency, urged the party’s newly elected MLAs on Monday to remain humble and avoid letting victory inflate their egos, and he asked party workers to remember the organisation’s past even as they celebrate.
In an address delivered on Saturday, Saikia traced the party’s rise in Assam, noting that its vote share climbed from about 2% in the 1985 Assembly polls to more than 48% in the 2026 Assembly election. He described that early low point as neither a cause for panic nor a reason for despair, just as the party’s sweeping mandate this year should not prompt unchecked triumphalism.
Saikia pointed out that the party’s historic mandate — an average strike rate of over 91% — brings with it greater responsibility. He said accountability of MLAs and party workers to the public “equally gets doubled,” and urged each legislator to be prepared “to return the people of their respective areas the capital with interest in the form of service.”
He also called for strong coordination among the government, the party and its various organisations, stressing a collective approach to governance and public service.
Saikia made the remarks as chief guest at a felicitation organised by the Darrang district BJP at the district library auditorium to honour Nilima Devi, newly inducted as a Cabinet minister and Mangaldai MLA, and Dr. Paramananda Rajbongshi, who was elected to the State Assembly for a consecutive second term.
Nilima Devi, the first woman minister from the Mangaldai legislative assembly constituency, recalled her 31-year association with the party and pledged to stay connected with workers. Sipajhar MLA Dr. Paramananda Rajbongshi urged collaboration with MP Saikia and Minister Devi to transform Darrang from an aspirational district into a developing one.
