Trinamool Crisis: Mamata and Abhishek to Join INDIA Bloc Meet Today
Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee will attend an INDIA bloc meeting in New Delhi on June 8, 2026, as the party seeks support amid an internal crisis following its defeat in the state elections. The pair, who met Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal in New Delhi on June 7, traveled to the capital over the weekend to press fellow opposition leaders for backing.
Political observers say the meeting is especially significant for Mamata and Abhishek Banerjee, who face mounting pressure after the party’s recent electoral losses. The visit is being closely watched for signs of solidarity from other INDIA allies and for possible strategies to stabilise the Trinamool Congress.
The party is confronting what senior members describe as an existential crisis after a majority group broke away in the West Bengal Assembly. There are now increasing fears that a comparable majority could form within the party’s parliamentary contingent, reportedly led by rebel TMC Lok Sabha MP Dr Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar.
A party insider said almost all TMC MPs from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are currently in New Delhi, underscoring the high stakes of the meeting and the urgency of resolving internal divisions. In this context, developments within the Trinamool and the INDIA bloc’s response will attract intense attention.
Abhishek Banerjee reached New Delhi on Saturday afternoon, June 6, while Mamata arrived on Sunday evening, June 7. Their meeting with Kejriwal on June 7 was photographed and circulated by party sources.
Abhishek’s presence in the capital also meant he did not appear before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal Police at its South Kolkata headquarters by noon on Monday, June 8, 2026. The CID notice relates to an investigation into mismatched signatures by several TMC legislators on a resolution concerning the appointment of four key opposition positions in the West Bengal Assembly. This was the second time Abhishek skipped a CID summons, the first being on June 1. A hearing on his petition challenging the CID notice and seeking protection from coercive police action, including arrest, is scheduled before a single-judge vacation bench in Kolkata on June 10, 2026.
