Guwahati police conducted a late-night raid on the day of the Indian Premier League final, uncovering what officers described as a major illegal betting operation. The search at the home of the alleged organiser, identified as Alok Jain, yielded cash, jewellery, multiple electronic devices, luxury vehicles and documents linked to numerous properties.
“The action was the result of a detailed intelligence-based investigation,” Guwahati’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central), Shambhavi Mishra, told reporters, saying a dedicated team of senior officers carried out the operation. The team included the Additional DCP and the ACP of the Noonmati subdivision, along with other personnel.
Investigators say Jain had been under surveillance for suspected involvement in unlawful gambling. Police recovered 16 smartphones, two laptops, computer monitors and tablets that they allege were used to manage betting transactions and to monitor live match coverage during the IPL final.
Authorities also seized about Rs 80,000 in cash and a substantial quantity of jewellery. Several high-end vehicles parked at the premises were taken into custody, and documents relating to roughly 26 properties across different parts of Guwahati were recovered.
Officials are analysing digital devices, financial records and property papers to determine the scale of the betting network and to trace any monetary links. Police indicated that the seized assets and documents will play a key role in mapping the operation and identifying associated parties.
No formal charge-sheet or list of arrested individuals was released at the time of the briefing. Police said the investigation remains active and that further legal proceedings, including additional arrests, could follow depending on the evidence that emerges from forensic and financial analysis.
The Guwahati police statement framed the raid as part of a wider effort to crack down on illegal gambling tied to sporting events, and investigators have not yet commented on whether the operation connects to larger regional or national betting syndicates.
