West Asia War: U.S. Pushes Lebanon, Israel Toward Ceasefire — Live
Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, warned on Sunday, May 31, 2026, that Tehran does not trust the United States and will not accept any agreement with Washington unless Iran’s rights are fully secured. His comments came amid reports of a new, tougher peace framework sent to Iran by US President Donald Trump, underscoring persistent gaps between the parties that negotiators must still close.
The New York Times and Axios reported that Mr. Trump had returned a “tougher” proposal for Iran’s consideration, but both outlets said details of the revised framework remained unclear. Ghalibaf’s statement highlighted Tehran’s insistence that any deal must guarantee its core interests before talks can advance.
Mr. Trump has said his negotiating priorities include preventing Iran from developing any nuclear weapons and reopening the Strait of Hormuz shipping lane, which the report says Iran has blockaded since the war began. In an interview on Fox News with his daughter-in-law Lara Trump, the president emphasized the need for firm assurances, saying, “The one guarantee that I have to have is that there will be no nuclear weapons. They’ve agreed to that, and it was very interesting.”
The exchange reflects a widening diplomatic rift at a critical moment for negotiations and raises questions about whether the parties can bridge differences on nuclear limits and maritime access. (AFP)
