A night bus operated by YATRA Travels overturned in Lakhimpur district early Saturday morning (May 23, 2026) after the driver lost control and the vehicle struck a roadside tree near the Shingara Dalong area of Naobaichar Dolhat Tinali. The accident left several passengers injured and claimed the life of Dipjyoti Bora, a young resident of Gereki Pohardia village in Majuli, who was returning home after appearing for a job examination in Guwahati.
According to family members and local sources, Dipjyoti had traveled to Guwahati last Thursday to sit for an exam for the vacant computer teacher post at Keshwaram Bora Higher Secondary School. He spoke with relatives for the last time on Friday night at around 9 pm. When family members repeatedly called him at about 5 am on Saturday with no response, alarm spread among them and they went searching for information.
Local residents who rushed to the scene immediately after the crash rescued passengers trapped inside the bus and took the injured to Lakhimpur Civil Hospital for treatment. Authorities and hospital officials have not released detailed casualty figures in the reports provided to local media.
News of Dipjyoti Bora’s death plunged his family into deep grief and cast a pall over Majuli and his native village. Community members accompanied the return of his body to the family home, and student groups and local organizations gathered to pay their respects. Present at the rites were representatives from the Majuli District Student Union, the Koch Rajbanshi Student Union, and the Majuli District AAPCU, among others.
In response to the tragedy, the Majuli District Student Union demanded a high-level investigation into the circumstances of the crash. The organization urged the administration to adopt stricter safety measures for night buses, including regular inspections and the adoption of mandatory staffing norms-proposing that each night bus carry three drivers to reduce fatigue-related risks.
The calls from student bodies highlight growing community concern over road safety on routes connecting Guwahati and Majuli. Officials have been asked to respond swiftly to the demands and to outline steps that will prevent similar incidents in the future.
