Sikkim’s Gnersongmit Lepcha Triumphs on Mt. Everest with ITBP Women
Gnersongmit Lepcha of Men Rongong, Mangan in North Sikkim, successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest on May 21, 2026, as a member of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Women’s Mount Everest Expedition. Her ascent marks a significant achievement for Sikkim and adds to the growing presence of women climbers from the region on the world’s highest peak.
A daughter of Lt. Phurba Lepcha and Kanchi Lepcha, Gnersongmit holds a master’s degree in Lepcha from Sikkim University. She joined the ITBP in 2022 and was selected for the prestigious women’s expedition team, undergoing the training and acclimatization required for high-altitude mountaineering.
Her successful summit on May 21 has been widely celebrated in Sikkim as a testament to her determination and skill. Observers say her achievement highlights the increasing contribution of women from the state to high-altitude expeditions and serves as an inspiration for young mountaineers in the region.
Gnersongmit’s climb underscores both individual perseverance and the support systems-family, education and institutional training-that enable such feats. Her accomplishment is likely to boost interest in mountaineering careers among Sikkim’s youth and further raise the profile of women-led expeditions from the Himalayan states.
