Assam Triumphs: 3 Villages Win at Panchayat Awards 2025
Guwahati, May 16: Assam has won three national honours at the National Panchayat Awards 2025 announced by the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj, with gram panchayats from Nagaon, Dibrugarh and Sonitpur being recognised for sanitation, infrastructure and overall rural governance. The awards, presented under the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar (DDUPSVP) and the Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvottam Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar (NDSPSVP), will be given at a ceremony in New Delhi on June 3.
New Napam Gram Panchayat in Sonitpur district secured the top national spot under the NDSPSVP category for Best Gram Panchayat and will receive Rs 1.50 crore. The award highlights excellence in grassroots governance, rural infrastructure, service delivery, social inclusion, environmental sustainability and implementation of flagship schemes.
Jumarmur Gram Panchayat in Nagaon district earned a joint second position in the Clean & Green Panchayat category under DDUPSVP and will be awarded Rs 37.50 lakh. According to the Ministry, Jumarmur — with a population of 6,032 across 1,245 households — implemented decentralised solid and liquid waste-management systems in all wards, introduced waste segregation and composting, and carried out plantation drives along roads and in public spaces. The panchayat achieved ODF Plus status and universal sanitation coverage, with active participation from self-help groups and youth collectives cited as a key factor.
Hoogrijan Gram Panchayat in Dibrugarh district won second place in the Self-Sufficient Infrastructure in Panchayat category and will receive Rs 75 lakh. Hoogrijan, with 4,512 residents and 1,038 households, was recognised for building all-weather roads, drainage systems, public buildings and community assets. The panchayat also developed internet-enabled citizen service facilities, improved connectivity and expanded street lighting through convergence-based project implementation.
The National Panchayat Awards aim to acknowledge exemplary work by Panchayati Raj Institutions nationwide in advancing sustainable development goals and strengthening local self-governance.
