Star Lovlina Borgohain Leads Team India Boxing for CWG & Asian Games
Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain, giant-killer Sakshi Chaudhary, Jadumani Singh and Narender Berwal were among the standout winners on the final day of national selection trials in Patiala on May 16 as India finalised boxing squads for the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games. Several fighters sealed spots across weight categories after a day marked by fierce fights and strategic weight-class reshuffles.
Also earning their places were world championship bronze medallist Parveen Hooda (65kg), Sumit Kundu (70kg), Ankush (80kg) and Kapil Pokhariya (90kg), each victorious in their respective finals. Reigning national champion Aditya Pratap Singh (65kg) qualified only for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, which are scheduled for July–August, while the Asian Games are set for Aichi–Nagoya, Japan in September–October.
The trials saw several boxers change divisions to fit limited quota slots. In the marquee bout, two-time youth world champion Sakshi Chaudhary produced a clinical performance to blank reigning 48kg world champion Minakshi Hooda 5-0 and clinch the 51kg berth. It was Sakshi’s second win over a world champion in as many days, having defeated two-time world gold medallist Nikhat Zareen on Thursday.
Sakshi’s resurgence is notable after she had earlier failed to make the cut for the Asian Championships under the federation’s now-scrapped assessment system. With Preeti Pawar already holding the 54kg quota through her Asian Championships gold, Sakshi moved down a category — a gamble that paid off.
The selected women’s contingent includes Sakshi Chaudhary (51kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), Jaismine Lamboria (57kg, only CWG), Priya Ghanghas (60kg), Parveen Hooda (65kg), Arundhati Chaudhary (70kg, only CWG) and Lovlina Borgohain (75kg). The men’s team features Jadumani Singh (55kg), Sachin Siwach (60kg), Aditya Pratap Singh (65kg, only CWG), Sumit Kundu (70kg), Ankush (80kg), Kapil Pokhariya (90kg) and Narender Berwal (+90kg). PTI
