Manipur Violence: Village Chief Among 4 Civilians Injured in Firing
At least four civilians, including the chief of Chassad village, were injured on Saturday afternoon when suspected NSCN-IM cadres allegedly opened fire with automatic weapons in Manipur’s Kamjong district, according to preliminary information.
The firing was reported at around 2.30 pm in Chassad village, prompting calls for the immediate intervention of security forces amid rising concerns over civilian safety and the possibility of further violence in the area.
Those injured in the shooting have been identified as Thangjahao Haokip, chief of Chassad village; St. Khailun Haokip and Seikhohao, both members of the Chassad Village Authority; and Seipao Haokip, chief of Phungtha (Kachouphung-Kuki).
Notably, Seipao Haokip had reportedly been living as an internally displaced person (IDP) after fleeing his native village, following alleged threats and violence involving NSCN-IM cadres and Tangkhul groups.
The injured were shifted to a nearby Army camp in Chassad for medical treatment, according to the information available.
The circumstances that led to the firing, the current condition of the injured and the response of security forces were not immediately known. Further details are awaited as the situation in the Kamjong district continues to develop.
