Historic Meghalaya Cabinet Approves Khasi & Garo as Official Languages

The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved the Meghalaya Official Languages Ordinance, 2026, granting official status to Khasi and Garo alongside English — a policy shift aimed at promoting the state’s indigenous languages and replacing the Meghalaya State Language Act, 2005. The move signals a planned integration of regional tongues into government functions and public life across the state.

Under the ordinance, Khasi and Garo will be gradually introduced into official government communication, administrative procedures and state-level examinations. Officials said the transition will be phased and will require legal amendments to align existing rules and processes with the new policy.

The government also anticipates changes to the Meghalaya State Legislature (Continuance of English Language) Act, 1980, which would allow legislators to speak and participate in Assembly proceedings in Khasi and Garo in addition to English. Authorities cautioned that use of the languages in the Assembly may not begin immediately, but expressed optimism that future sessions — particularly in the new Assembly building — will see broader linguistic inclusion.

The decision follows a resolution passed by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly advocating the inclusion of Khasi and Garo in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. The state government believes recognising the languages at the state level will strengthen its case for national recognition.

After Cabinet approval, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma met members of the Khasi Authors Society to discuss implementation. He described the ordinance as a long-awaited milestone, acknowledged that full implementation will take time, and sought the cooperation of literary bodies in framing the rules needed for effective execution. Sangma credited both the Khasi Authors Society and the Achik Literature Society for sustained advocacy that helped advance the cause. Deputy Chief Ministers Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar were present at the meeting.
