Historic Assam Polls: Record 85.38% Turnout Beats 2016
Assam recorded a record voter turnout of 85.38 per cent in the ongoing assembly elections, the Election Commission of India said, surpassing the state’s previous high of 84.67 per cent set in 2016. The figure marks a new peak in participation across constituencies and signals unusually strong engagement in this poll.
Officials described the milestone as a significant jump in electoral participation, saying the steady rise in turnout reflects growing public confidence in the voting process and robust voter enthusiasm across urban and rural areas.
A notable feature of this election was higher participation among women: female turnout stood at 85.96 per cent, marginally above the 84.80 per cent recorded for male voters, continuing a trend of women outpacing men at the ballot box.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar called the turnout “a historic testimony” to the strength of democracy and congratulated the people of Assam for their active participation.
The record places Assam among the top-performing states in recent assembly elections on voter engagement, underscoring the state’s role in the wider narrative of rising electoral participation.
