Trump Calls Iran’s Performance ‘Dishonourable!’ as Ship Traffic Plummets in Hormuz Amid Ceasefire Chaos

On April 9, Donald Trump criticized Iran for its management of the Strait of Hormuz, asserting that the nation is doing a “very poor job.” In a post on his social media platform, Trump emphasized that Tehran’s handling of oil transit through this crucial maritime route could be considered “dishonorable.” He expressed concern over reports suggesting Iran may be imposing fees on oil tankers passing through the strait, stating, “That is not the agreement we have!” He urged, “They better not be, and if they are, they better stop now!”

This statement comes just ahead of crucial peace talks set to take place on April 10 in Islamabad, where high-ranking officials from both the U.S. and Iran will meet to discuss the ongoing Middle East conflict. The White House is advocating for reopening the strait as part of a ceasefire agreement, but Trump opposes Iran’s military control over the waterway. He remains concerned that Tehran may attempt to generate revenue by charging tolls to passing vessels.

Amid these developments, Iran has pointed to escalating tensions with Israel, particularly ongoing attacks in Lebanon, as a significant barrier to peace discussions. In response to the conflict, Iran proposed a ten-point settlement plan, which includes maintaining control over the Strait of Hormuz, acknowledging its right to nuclear enrichment, lifting sanctions, and bringing an end to the war-particularly conflicts involving Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Following the ceasefire announcement by Trump on April 10, traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remained notably subdued. In the initial 24 hours after the ceasefire, only one oil products tanker and five dry bulk carriers navigated the strait-a striking contrast to the more than 100 vessels that typically traverse the route daily during peacetime.

Ship-tracking data further illustrated Iran’s tight grip on the strait. An LNG tanker registered under Botswana, named Nidi, attempted to exit the Persian Gulf via a route sanctioned by the Revolutionary Guard but abruptly turned back early on Friday. Notably, on Thursday alone, only four tankers and three bulk carriers managed to make the passage, bringing the total number of ships to at least twelve since the ceasefire began. However, additional vessels may have crossed without transmitting their location data.

As diplomatic efforts unfold and the situation in the Middle East develops, the implications of Iran’s management of the Strait of Hormuz will likely remain a focal point of international scrutiny. The future of maritime transit through this vital trade route will be pivotal in shaping the region’s stability and economic interactions in the months ahead.

In summary, as tensions persist and diplomatic dialogues intensify, both Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz and Trump’s responses will play critical roles in determining the trajectory of peace talks in the complex landscape of Middle Eastern geopolitics.
