Tamulpur Sealed: India-Bhutan Border Closed for Assam Polls Till Apr 9
The Tamulpur district administration has ordered all land entry and exit points along the India–Bhutan international border to be sealed from 5 pm on April 6, 2026, until polling concludes on April 9, 2026, in line with Election Commission of India (ECI) guidelines for the Assam Assembly elections. The move, aimed at preventing unlawful activities or influence during voting, was issued by District Magistrate and District Election Officer Simi Karan under Section 163(2) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.
The directive restricts movement of both individuals and vehicles across the international border in Tamulpur district for the specified period. Officials said the measure follows standard ECI protocols designed to secure the electoral process and maintain order during polling.
Certain exemptions have been provided. People travelling from Bhutan to India for medical emergencies will be allowed entry. Indian citizens and foreign tourists who have already entered Bhutan, as well as those planning travel there with valid documents, will be permitted to cross. Vehicles carrying essential perishable goods may be allowed after verification at designated check posts.
Voters from the 43-Tamulpur (ST) and 44-Goreswar Assembly constituencies will be granted entry into the district on production of valid identification and supporting documents. The district administration has asked all departments, security personnel and residents to strictly comply with the order to ensure peaceful and orderly polling.
Voting for all 126 Assam Assembly seats will be held in a single phase on April 9, 2026, with counting scheduled for May 4, 2026.
