Himanta Biswa Sarma Denies Passport Row, Calls Pawan Khera Data Flawed
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 5 said he would file a formal complaint and seek a police probe after Congress leader Pawan Khera released data alleging undisclosed assets and multiple passports linked to Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan. Sarma rejected the claims as “baseless,” saying the documents Khera presented contain multiple discrepancies and inconsistencies in names, language and other details.
Sarma told reporters he would ask the Assam Police to verify the authenticity of the material and to take appropriate action if any fabrication is established. He emphasized that the alleged papers do not withstand scrutiny and framed the matter as one requiring formal investigation rather than public speculation.
Speaking during campaigning for the Assam Assembly elections, the Chief Minister expressed confidence in the NDA’s prospects in the state. He said there was a “massive outpouring of support” in the Boko constituency and predicted a decisive win for the alliance candidate, Raju Mech, by a significant margin.
On development promises for Boko, Sarma announced a planned allocation of ₹200 crore for road infrastructure and said the government is working to establish an educational institute in the region to boost long-term growth and access to opportunities. He presented these initiatives as part of the BJP-led alliance’s outreach to voters.
Projecting broader electoral outcomes, Sarma said the NDA could secure between 90 and 100 seats in the Assembly, with a possibility of crossing the 100-seat mark. He also criticized the Congress for internal divisions, contrasting that with what he described as the BJP’s organised campaign efforts.
Addressing a separate controversy, Sarma raised concerns about cultural sensitivities around actions attributed to AJP candidate Kunki Choudhury and cited reports about the naming of an institution after Vaishnavite saint Srimanta Sankardev, linking these issues to public perception and voter sentiment.
