Manipur CM’s Bold $1.3T Roadmap to Revive Northeast Agriculture
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Monday in Imphal released a policy document titled “Agricultural Extension Innovations for Achieving a US $1.3 Trillion North East India Economy @ 2047 (Shillong Declaration),” presenting a roadmap for transforming agriculture across the region, an official statement said. The document outlines future-ready measures aimed at boosting productivity, value addition and sustainable growth to help realise the region’s long-term economic target.
Noting that more than half of the population depends on farming, the Chief Minister said the sector requires renewed focus and stronger support to improve livelihoods and drive regional development. He stressed that targeted policies and sustained attention are essential to address the sector’s challenges.
Singh highlighted the role of innovation and entrepreneurship, saying such platforms can harness young talent and link them to practical, market-facing problems. He framed innovation as a bridge between research, technology and on-the-ground farming needs.
The Chief Minister added that, in consultation with the Planning Department, the government will explore ways to maximise agricultural benefits for youth, particularly by integrating agriculture with the state’s startup ecosystem. This approach aims to create new income streams and retain skilled young people in rural economies.
Singh also emphasised that agriculture remains a key concern for both the state and the country and called for continued policy support. He said the North East has the potential to emerge as a hub for high-value, sustainable agriculture driven by research, innovation and youth-led entrepreneurship.
