Chaos at US Airports: ICE Agents Fight for Order Amid TSA Shutdown Delays!

By adminitfy
March 23, 2026 2 Min Read

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has dispatched officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to major airports across the country to manage increasing disruptions and long security lines. This initiative, announced by President Donald Trump, has Tom Homan at the helm, overseeing operations at over a dozen airports nationwide.

The crisis stems from a partial government shutdown that began in February after the funding for DHS lapsed, primarily due to ongoing political disputes over immigration policies between Democrats and some Republicans. The shutdown has left tens of thousands of federal employees, including vital airport security staff, working without pay, exacerbating the situation.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has been particularly affected, with absenteeism rates reaching 11.5%—the highest since the shutdown’s onset. In major airports like Houston, New York, and Atlanta, more than a third of TSA agents were reportedly absent, and over 400 TSA employees have resigned since mid-February. This staffing shortfall has resulted in significant delays at airports, including Atlanta, JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, Phoenix, and New Orleans.

As ICE agents join the fray, their role remains limited. While they assist with basic duties like identity checks, they lack the clearance to operate beyond security checkpoints. Footage on social media shows them working alongside TSA personnel rather than independently managing the lines. At Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, known for its high passenger volume, the situation has become particularly dire, with lengthy queues spilling outside the north terminal. ICE agents, while present, were not directly involved in crowd management.

Passengers at airports such as Atlanta experienced chaotic conditions with TSA lines extending far beyond what’s typically expected. Standard services like TSA PreCheck and Clear lanes were unavailable, placing the responsibility of crowd control squarely on airport staff rather than ICE agents.

Compounding the issue, the airport suspended real-time TSA wait time updates both online and on monitors throughout the terminal. Usually, digital displays show estimated wait times, but during this crisis, they remained blank. The airport’s website replaced live updates with a general advisory urging travelers to arrive at least four hours early.

The continuing shutdown only heightens political tensions in Washington. With lawmakers at an impasse over DHS funding and immigration policies, public frustration has intensified over the travel disruptions, the plight of unpaid federal workers, and various ICE-related incidents. As the situation evolves, both travelers and officials alike watch closely for a resolution that balances security and operational efficiency in the face of an ongoing crisis.

This unfolding drama at the nation’s airports highlights the delicate interplay between government policy and its immediate impact on the public, raising questions about the prioritization of operational stability amid political strife.
