IT Sets Control Room to Curb Black Money Ahead of Assam Polls 2026
The Income Tax department has set up a 24×7 control room at Aayakar Bhawan in Guwahati to curb the use of black money in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, the department said in an official statement. Elections for the 126-member Assembly are scheduled for April 9, 2026, with vote counting on May 4, 2026. The control room will operate until the election process is complete and is intended to assist the Election Commission in “curbing the role of black money in elections.”
The Directorate of Income Tax (Investigation), North Eastern Region, Guwahati, said it will keep a strict vigil during the Model Code of Conduct period on the movement of unaccounted cash, bullion, precious metals and other valuables that are likely or suspected to be used for electoral purposes. “During the period of the Model Code of Conduct, the Directorate of Income Tax (Investigation), North Eastern Region, Guwahati will maintain strict vigil on the movement of unaccounted cash, bullion, precious metals and other valuables…,” the statement said.
Members of the public are urged to report credible information about suspicious movement or distribution of cash, precious metals or other valuables connected to the elections. The control room can be reached by mobile/WhatsApp at 9401085214 and 9181324184, by landline at 0361-2340396, or by email at ssamelections26@gmail.com. These channels have been made operational specifically for election-related reports.
The statement emphasized that informants are not required to disclose personal details: “Informants are not required to disclose personal details such as name or identity. However, it is essential that the information shared is credible and actionable.” Officials said tips will be treated confidentially and acted upon as appropriate.
The move reflects authorities’ broader efforts to limit illicit money’s influence on electoral outcomes and to ensure a level playing field during campaigning. Voters and citizens who observe suspicious transfers or distributions of cash or valuables are being asked to come forward through the control room so that allegations can be investigated promptly.
