U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has indicated that the United States Navy may soon start escorting oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz amid rising tensions following attacks on shipping and energy infrastructure in the Persian Gulf. In an interview with Sky News, Bessent suggested that naval escorts could be implemented as soon as the situation allows, stating, “My belief is that as soon as it is militarily possible, the U.S. Navy, perhaps with an international coalition, will be escorting vessels through.” Despite the current tensions, he noted that some vessels, including Iranian and Chinese-flagged tankers, continue to traverse the strait, indicating that it has not been mined.

A recent social media post from Wright created confusion when it incorrectly suggested that a U.S. Navy escort had already been carried out, leading to a momentary market dip with oil prices plummeting over 17% at one point.
