Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Commissioner Ketan Garg highlighted critical developments impacting water demand in the Visakhapatnam region during a recent workshop focused on capital investment planning for the water sector. Set against a backdrop of significant infrastructure projects-including the Google AI Data Centre, Bhogapuram International Airport, Pharma City, and several IT Special Economic Zones (SEZs)—Garg emphasized the necessity to prepare for a dramatic increase in water usage.
Currently, the city requires around 400 million liters per day (MLD) to meet its needs. However, as Garg noted, this demand is expected to soar to nearly 726 MLD by 2040, largely due to the projected construction of approximately 750,000 new housing units and the influx of businesses.
