Kochi Corporation Council Meeting Ends in Turmoil: LDF Voices Strong Dissent Over Controversial Loan Dispute
Kochi Corporation’s recent council meeting took a dramatic turn as it convened to approve the annual plan projects for submission to the District Planning Committee (DPC). While the meeting began cordially, it ended with the opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) issuing a dissent note following allegations made by a ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) councillor regarding a loan proposal from the previous LDF administration.
The LDF accused the UDF-led council of flouting norms in the selection process for projects intended for DPC approval, announcing plans to formally petition the DPC as a follow-up. The council reviewed development projects totaling approximately ₹207.48 crore, including ₹133 crore earmarked from the plan fund.
Initially, LDF parliamentary party leader V.A. Sreejith emphasized the opposition’s willingness to engage constructively in the city’s development, seeking assurances that all standing committees had convened to review the projects. He urged the need for clarity on sector-wise allocations.
As the session unfolded, tensions escalated. Ruling councillor M.G. Aristotle questioned a ₹10.78 crore loan proposal approved by the previous LDF council, demanding to know who sanctioned it without the current council’s consent. “Who gave the approval for such a loan? Let the opposition leader clarify,” he insisted.
In response, Sreejith defended the previous council’s actions, contending that the loan was rightfully authorized. Mayor V.K. Minimol supported this stance, noting the necessity of the loan given the corporation’s ongoing financial challenges. However, Sreejith challenged the UDF’s approach, stating, “We are willing if this council decides never to take loans. We had agreed to cooperate in getting projects cleared, but if the ruling side wants to politicize matters, so be it.”
Minimol attempted to calm the situation, explaining that the proposed loan from Hudco had not yet been acted upon, which complicated the corporation’s ability to manage expenses. Sreejith responded by alleging that various proposals approved through ward sabhas, development seminars, and standing committees had been overridden, with new ones introduced outside established procedures. He criticized the rejection of multiple park proposals, pointing out disparities in funding allocations, particularly a ₹1 crore project dedicated to a park honoring late Congress leader P.T. Thomas.
Defending these decisions, Minimol argued that previous funding for park renovations had been ineffective. The proposal for the memorial park, she claimed, was in line with the UDF’s agenda to safeguard public spaces. “The park is proposed in front of the Ravipuram cemetery to reclaim an area currently reduced to a dumping ground. Let us not go by the name alone,” she stated.
As the meeting concluded, the contrasting viewpoints underscored the ongoing friction between the ruling UDF and the opposition LDF. The dynamics at play reflect the complexities of governance in Kochi, as both parties navigate development initiatives and political rivalries.
