Report: Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei to be Buried in Mashhad
Iran’s slain supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will be buried in the holy city of Mashhad, the Fars news agency said Tuesday, after he was killed at age 86 during a wave of US‑Israeli attacks on Saturday. The announcement said burial will take place in the northeastern city where Khamenei was born and where his father is buried at the Imam Reza shrine.
The Revolutionary Guards said on their Telegram account that a “large farewell ceremony” will be held in Tehran before the burial, but authorities have not disclosed a date. Fars reported that, citing an official familiar with the process, the Assembly of Experts’ final meeting to choose a successor could be postponed “for security reasons” until after the funeral.
Following Khamenei’s death, power has been temporarily entrusted to a three‑member interim council until the Assembly of Experts elects a new supreme leader. That interim body includes the president, the head of the judiciary and a jurist from the Guardian Council — the institution that oversees legislation and vets electoral candidates.
Iranian media reported that the building housing the Assembly of Experts, an 88‑member body located in the holy city of Qom south of Tehran, was hit Tuesday by US‑Israeli strikes. The assembly’s main headquarters in Tehran was also struck the day before, according to those reports.
