Historic Milestone: PM Modi Unveils Micron Technology’s Groundbreaking Semiconductor Plant in Gujarat, Sparking Innovation and Growth!
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Semiconductor Assembly, Test, and Packaging (ATMP) facility of Micron Semiconductor Technology India Private Limited in Sanand, Gujarat, today, marking a pivotal milestone in India’s semiconductor manufacturing landscape. This event signals the launch of commercial production and the first shipments of domestically-made semiconductor memory modules, showcasing India’s advancing role in the global semiconductor value chain.
During his address, Modi highlighted the significance of the recent India AI Impact Summit, which positioned the nation as a rising player in artificial intelligence. He asserted that while the previous century revolved around oil, this one will be guided by microchips, reinforcing the importance of technological innovation. “This historic day demonstrates India’s commitment to leadership in technology,” Modi remarked, noting the transition from a software-centric reputation to emerging as a competitive force in hardware and global supply chains.
The Prime Minister emphasized the event as a symbol of collaboration between India and the United States, crucial for securing global supply chains, especially in semiconductor and AI sectors. He pointed out the rapid development of the ATMP facility, stating, “From the MoU to the start of commercial production, we send a clear message: India is ready, reliable, and delivers.”
As part of the Semiconductor Mission 2.0, which has approved ten major projects, a comprehensive ecosystem is taking shape across India, from Sanand to Noida and Assam. Modi described this decade as transformative for the nation’s youth, as India solidifies its capabilities within the manufacturing sector to meet the growing demand for electronics and automobiles.
Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw echoed these sentiments, asserting that the semiconductor industry serves as a foundational sector for India’s economy. He highlighted significant growth in electronics manufacturing and exports under Modi’s leadership, with electronics exports increasing eightfold and mobile phones emerging as one of the country’s top exports. Vaishnaw called the inauguration of the facility historic, emphasizing that chips designed in India will now be produced on Indian soil.
With a total investment surpassing ₹22,500 crore, the Micron facility represents the first project approved under the India Semiconductor Mission. Groundbreaking in September 2023, the facility is now outfitted to convert advanced DRAM and NAND wafers into finished products for global markets. Notably, it features nearly 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space, making it one of the largest raised-floor cleanrooms worldwide.
This inauguration underscores India’s aspiration to establish itself as a formidable player in the global semiconductor arena while fostering domestic manufacturing capabilities. As the demand for technological solutions expands, the Sanand ATMP facility positions India as a credible and reliable partner in the evolving landscape of electronics and semiconductor manufacturing.
This significant advancement not only highlights India’s commitment to enhancing its manufacturing ecosystem but also is a testament to the country’s growing influence on the global stage in technology and innovation.
