Urgent Storm Alert: Blizzard Chaos Unfolds-Where is it Now and When Will it Impact New York?
A rapidly strengthening nor’easter is making its presence felt along the East Coast, bringing snow to portions of the Great Lakes and the interior Northeast as of Sunday morning. According to NBC New York, light snow is already advancing from the Great Lakes into parts of upstate New York and Pennsylvania. In contrast, the Interstate 95 corridor, which includes major cities like New York and Philadelphia, began the day with rain, as temperatures hovered just above freezing.
Forecasters predict a transition to snow as colder air continues to push south and east. The storm is intensifying and is expected to transform into a bomb cyclone from Sunday into Monday, leading to blizzard conditions in coastal regions of the mid-Atlantic and southern New England, as reported by AccuWeather.
In New York City, rain is projected to mix with and change to snow by late Sunday morning or early afternoon, with heavier snowfall anticipated to commence later in the day. AccuWeather indicates that snow is expected to begin in Philadelphia around 1 p.m. Sunday, spreading to the Jersey Shore and New York City by approximately 4 p.m. Conditions are anticipated to deteriorate rapidly on Sunday evening, as both winds and snowfall intensity increase.
A blizzard warning will go into effect at 1 p.m. Sunday for all five boroughs of New York City, Long Island, parts of Connecticut, and large sections of New Jersey, remaining active until 6 p.m. Monday. Forecasts suggest that New York City, central New Jersey, and Nassau County could see between 12 to 18 inches of snow, with even greater accumulations of up to two feet expected further east.
The storm is set to impact nearly 40 million residents from Delaware to southern New England, bringing sustained winds of at least 35 mph and dramatically reduced visibility to a quarter mile or less for three continuous hours. In certain areas, wind gusts could soar to 70 mph through Monday, increasing the likelihood of power outages and making travel nearly impossible at times.
Emergency declarations have been issued across New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Delaware, with officials activating emergency operations centers as the storm approaches. Residents are being strongly urged to complete their preparations immediately, as the region braces for one of the most significant winter storms in recent years.
As the nor’easter gathers momentum, authorities and meteorologists will continue to monitor the storm closely, providing updates on its progress and potential impacts. With winter conditions worsening rapidly, staying informed will be essential for those in the storm’s path.
