Delhi Man Arrested with Ganja Worth Rs 40,000 on Sribhumi Bus
A 47-year-old man from Delhi was arrested on Saturday night at the Churaibari checkpoint near the Assam–Tripura interstate border in Sribhumi district after police recovered about 2.7 kg of ganja from his bag, officials said on Sunday. The contraband is estimated to have a black-market value of around Rs 40,000.
The accused was identified as Ravi Shankar Singh, a resident of Madhu Vihar in West Delhi. He was detained during a routine naka checking at the Churaibari police checkpoint, authorities said.
According to police, the ganja was seized from a long-distance passenger bus traveling from Tripura to Guwahati. The vehicle was stopped at the interstate check gate and searched by a team led by OC Niranjan Das, who ordered a thorough inspection of passengers and their luggage.
Officers said they became suspicious of a passenger carrying a shoulder bag. A search of the bag reportedly turned up approximately 2.70 kg of ganja, which led to Singh’s immediate arrest on the spot in the presence of independent witnesses.
Preliminary inquiries indicate Singh was allegedly attempting to smuggle the cannabis out of Assam by posing as a regular bus passenger. He was taken into custody and kept overnight at Bazaricherra police station for questioning.
On Sunday, police booked Singh under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and produced him before the chief judicial magistrate’s court in Sribhumi, which remanded him to judicial custody, officials added. Police said the seizure underlines ongoing vigilance at interstate checkpoints to curb narcotics smuggling.
