Daniel Radcliffe Reveals Harry Potter’s ‘Worst Idea Ever’
Daniel Radcliffe has recalled what he called one of the “worst ideas” pitched to him during the peak of his Harry Potter fame: a plan to reunite him, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in a remake of The Wizard of Oz. Radcliffe described the pitch on a talk show, saying the proposal left him baffled even as a teenager.
“One of the worst ideas that I’ve ever heard: During Potter, somebody came to us and… wanted to cast all three of us — me, Emma, and Rupert — in a remake of The Wizard of Oz, where Emma was Dorothy,” he said, according to his account. Radcliffe could not remember which part Grint had been considered for, but he clearly recalled his own assigned role. “I just remember I was going to be the lion, but also, he knew karate. I was like a karate-kicking Cowardly Lion,” he said.
Radcliffe said the concept felt wrong from the start. “I was like 14 or 15, and I was like, ‘I don’t know a lot about the world, but this is a bad idea. This should not be made,’” he recalled, emphasizing how mismatched the idea seemed even to a young actor still learning the industry.
Radcliffe rose to international prominence as the lead of the Harry Potter film series and has since worked to broaden his range across stage and screen. He was most recently seen in Merrily We Roll Along, a filmed stage production of the award-winning musical, and is set to return to Broadway in the comedy The Rise and Fall of Reggie Dinkins.
