Unable to Bear Labour Pain, Woman Slits Abdomen, Delivers Healthy Baby
A 35-year-old pregnant woman in Bahraich allegedly slit her own abdomen with a kitchen knife during labour on Thursday and later delivered a healthy baby girl, officials said. The woman, identified as Nankai of Nandwal village in the Baundi police station area, was first taken to Fakharpur Community Health Centre by neighbours after they heard her screams, where she had a normal delivery.
Hospital staff said Nankai’s condition worsened after the birth and she was moved to the district hospital, where doctors discovered a deep abdominal wound that appeared to have been inflicted with a serrated knife. “She was brought to the hospital at around 3.20 pm on Thursday. Her intestines had protruded, and she had suffered significant blood loss,” the hospital’s chief medical superintendent told reporters. Because of the severity of her injuries, she was referred to a higher medical facility in Lucknow for advanced care.
Police said a video circulating on social media shows the woman on a stretcher and, allegedly, her saying she cut open her abdomen because the labour pain was unbearable. Neighbours told reporters that Nankai’s husband died about six months ago and that she had been living alone.
According to residents, when labour pains intensified on Thursday afternoon she allegedly used a vegetable knife to cut her abdomen. Locals alerted emergency services and an ambulance took her first to the community health centre, where the baby was delivered.
As Nankai’s condition deteriorated after childbirth she was shifted to the district hospital and then referred on to Lucknow. Her mother, Neeta, accompanied her in the ambulance, officials said.
