Tripura Man Sentenced to Life for Raping Minor Stepdaughter
A special POCSO court in West Tripura on Friday sentenced a 52-year-old man to life imprisonment and fined him Rs 5,000 for raping his 11-year-old stepdaughter on the night of April 15, 2024, authorities said. The conviction follows a trial brought under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
According to the complaint, the child’s mother briefly left the bedroom that night; when she returned she found the girl bleeding on the floor. Neighbours rushed in and the child was taken to hospital for urgent treatment. A formal complaint was filed the next day at Mandai police station, which triggered an investigation and eventually a charge sheet against the accused.
Special public prosecutor Jayanta Chowdhury described the verdict as unambiguous, saying, “The judge’s verdict was unequivocal, and the convict is to spend the remainder of his life behind bars.” The court’s sentence reflects the gravity of the offence under POCSO, the law enacted to protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation.
After the assault, the girl’s mother placed her in a childcare home, citing financial constraints. The child has since returned to school and is reported to be doing well. The case, prosecuted through Mandai police and tried in the special POCSO court, highlights enforcement of stringent penalties for child sexual abuse in Tripura.
