Silchar–Shillong–Guwahati HSR: Rs 22,600 Cr; PM to Lay Stone in Mar
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on February 15 announced at a press conference that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the Silchar–Shillong–Guwahati High-Speed Corridor during his visit to Assam in March. The project, aimed at linking major urban centres in Assam and Meghalaya, is positioned as a major upgrade to road connectivity across the Northeast.
Estimated at around Rs 22,600 crore, the corridor is described by the state government as one of the largest highway infrastructure allocations from the Central Government for the region. Officials say the new route will provide faster, safer and more efficient travel between key cities.
Once completed, the corridor is expected to cut travel time between Guwahati and Silchar to roughly 4.5–5 hours, a significant reduction from current journey times. Authorities anticipate the improved link will boost trade, expand tourism opportunities and accelerate economic development in Assam and Meghalaya by lowering transport costs and easing movement of people and goods.
Chief Minister Sarma called the initiative “game-changing” for regional connectivity, underlining its strategic importance for integration and growth. The announcement forms part of the Assam government’s wider infrastructure expansion plan focused on strengthening road networks and enhancing regional integration.
