Controversy as DGP Nongrang Granted Six-Month Extension in Shillong
SHILLONG, Feb 12 — The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved a six‑month extension in service for Meghalaya’s incumbent Director General of Police, Idashisha Nongrang, beginning from May 19, 2026. The extension, cleared on the recommendation of the Ministry of Home Affairs, will keep Nongrang in office until November 19, 2026, the order says.
The ACC’s approval was granted as a special case in the public interest and invokes a relaxation of Rule 16(1) of the All India Services (Death‑Cum‑Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958 to permit the continuity. The Ministry of Home Affairs had forwarded the proposal to the ACC for final sanction.
Rule 16 of the AIS (DCRB) Rules governs superannuation and provides the legal framework for retirement age and limited extensions in public interest; extensions beyond normal retirement require prior central approval under the rule. (indiankanoon.org)
Idashisha Nongrang, a 1992‑batch Indian Police Service officer, was appointed as Meghalaya’s first woman DGP on May 19, 2025. The extension means she will continue leading the state police through the six‑month period ordered by the Centre, a move framed by officials as necessary for administrative continuity and public interest.
