American Airlines flight attendants plan to hold a picket outside the airline’s headquarters on Thursday, demanding new leadership in light of the company’s lagging performance compared to rivals Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. The protest comes on the heels of a vote of no confidence issued by the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, representing 28,000 cabin crew members. This marks the first time the union has taken such a significant stance against CEO Robert Isom.
In an attempt to ease employee tensions, Isom addressed staff in a video message from the airline’s Fort Worth, Texas headquarters. He emphasized expected improvements for the year, highlighting projected profit increases, schedule enhancements, and the rollout of new cabin designs. “We look forward to working with all of you to make it happen,” he stated.
The flight attendants’ union is not alone in its criticism; American’s pilots’ union has also expressed concern, reaching out to the airline’s board-of which Isom is a member-to address ongoing issues. Complaints from unions representing pilots, flight attendants, and mechanics underscore a collective demand for better reliability and financial results from American Airlines.
This protest is a notable deviation from typical contract negotiations, indicating rising discontent among employees. Union leaders are intensifying their demands for accountability and a clear path forward, particularly after Isom has led the airline for nearly four years without satisfying key stakeholders.
American Airlines is currently undergoing a strategic overhaul, aiming to boost profits by modernizing airplane cabins and expanding airport lounges-particularly at its largest hub, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Free Wi-Fi and upgraded facilities are part of the initiative to enhance passenger experience as coach fares have seen declines.
Despite this focus on revenue growth, American Airlines’ performance statistics reveal significant room for improvement. For the first 11 months of the year, the airline ranked eighth in punctuality, with a 73.7% on-time rate, according to the Department of Transportation. Financially, American reported a net income of just $111 million last year-dismally trailing behind Delta’s $5 billion and United’s $3.3 billion. The disparity in profits has led to a diminished profit-sharing pool for employees, leading to further dissatisfaction.
In a recent town hall meeting, Isom acknowledged the importance of the new labor contracts recently finalized for pilots and flight attendants, which have brought increased wages relative to their counterparts at United. However, he expressed disappointment concerning the profit-sharing outcomes. Flight attendants’ frustrations have also mounted due to the airline’s difficulties recovering from significant winter storm disruptions, which have left some crew members stranded without accommodations.
“Our airline is on a trajectory that jeopardizes our careers,” the flight attendants’ union warned in a notice regarding the upcoming protest. “Now is the time for Flight Attendants to stand together and show up for our cause. American Airlines needs strong accountability, decisive action, and leadership that will ensure we regain our competitive edge.”
As Isom seeks to shore up support among frontline employees and upper management, he addressed around 6,000 managers at Globe Life Field in Arlington last week. “We’ve filled an entire Major League Baseball field with this proud and talented team. The best in the industry,” he noted, urging all to contribute to the airline’s profitability growth.
As American Airlines approaches its 100th anniversary, the pressure on leadership to deliver results and secure its future continues to mount.
