On the other side are smaller, more affordable retro handhelds, including models like the Anbernic RG35XX H, which primarily focus on emulating classic games from older console libraries.

After extensive testing with devices from both categories, including the ROG Ally, ROG Xbox Ally, Nintendo Switch, and retro options like the Anbernic RG35XX H and MIYOO Mini Plus, I’ve concluded that retro emulation handhelds often better embody the essence of a “handheld console” than many modern flagship models. This does not diminish the utility of newer, more powerful devices; however, capability does not always equate to suitability for handheld gaming.

The design of retro handhelds stands out immediately. These devices are typically smaller and lighter, using simpler hardware tailored for older games such as those from the NES, Game Boy, and PSP. This streamlined architecture means less need for large cooling systems or high-capacity batteries, resulting in a device that is not only easy to transport but also comfortable for extended play sessions. With primarily Linux-based operating systems, these handhelds offer a seamless user experience: power on, select a game, and play without the overhead typical of full desktop operating systems.

Furthermore, a significant portion of the game library these devices support was inherently designed for portable use, with titles from platforms like the Game Boy or PSP, ensuring they scale both visually and in gameplay feel when played on a handheld. This alignment extends to cost; as the hardware requirements are lower and the games older, retro handhelds are generally more affordable. You’re investing in a focused means to access a broad back catalogue rather than paying for modern gaming capabilities, which makes sense for a secondary device.

Some newer retro handhelds even run Android, allowing access to mobile games tailored for mobile play. These games often feel more intuitive on handhelds than many scaled-down modern console titles.

On the flip side, devices like the ROG Ally and ROG Xbox Ally shine due to their versatility. They can handle modern games, demanding emulation, cloud streaming, and even function as compact computers. For those seeking to play the latest PC titles on the go, retro handhelds simply can’t compete.

Ecosystem integration is another advantage of these modern devices. For example, with the ROG Xbox Ally, players can seamlessly transition between their Xbox console and handheld without losing save data. Additionally, these flagship handhelds usually come with superior screens that boast higher resolutions and refresh rates, crucial for modern gameplay.

However, achieving this performance comes at a cost. These devices tend to be heavier, bulkier, and more expensive, with limited battery life due to their demanding hardware and operating systems that aren’t perfectly optimized for portable use. Moreover, many new PC and console games are designed for larger screens and longer sessions, which can make their handheld adaptations less comfortable.

In practicality, both handheld categories cater primarily to different gaming needs. Those looking for a compact, budget-friendly solution for vintage games and casual Android titles will find retro handhelds more appealing. Conversely, gamers wanting to synchronize their gameplay experiences across platforms and delve into modern gaming may prefer powerful options like the ROG Ally or ROG Xbox Ally, albeit with the trade-offs of size, weight, and cost.

The Nintendo Switch offers a unique middle ground. With years of expertise in handheld consoles, Nintendo has curated a library of games designed for portable play, making the Switch’s transition between handheld and TV use notably smooth.

Ultimately, while retro handhelds excel at capturing the true spirit of portable gaming, modern Windows-based devices cater to a different audience, often prioritizing power and flexibility over simplicity. Both have their merits, yet for everyday handheld enjoyment, the straightforward design of retro emulators frequently gets the essentials right.
