Canada School Mass-Shooting: Nine Killed, Suspect Dead by Suicide

Nine people were killed on Feb. 11 in a mass shooting in the coal-mining town of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, officials said, and the alleged shooter — described in an alert as a brown‑haired female wearing a dress — was found dead at the local high school in an apparent suicide.

Chief Superintendent Ken Floyd of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) northern district said late Tuesday that seven people were found dead inside the high school and two others were found dead at a nearby home. Floyd said about 100 staff and students were evacuated from the school and accounted for.

Floyd, speaking at a virtual news conference, confirmed the person discovered dead in the school was the same individual named in an active shooter alert sent to phones in the area, but he declined to say whether the suspect was a student or an adult for privacy and investigative reasons. There were indications the shooter was a woman or someone in female attire.

Two people with serious injuries were airlifted to hospital, while 25 others were examined at a local medical centre, police said. British Columbia Premier David Eby called the incident an “unimaginable tragedy” and said the government would provide “every possible support for community members in the coming days.” Prime Minister Mark Carney wrote on X that he was “devastated” by the “horrific acts of violence.”

Floyd said investigators have not yet determined a motive. “I think we will struggle to determine the ‘why’, but we will try our best to determine what transpired,” he said. He added the shootings at the house and the school were connected and that the house is located near the school.

Tumbler Ridge, a town of roughly 2,400 people known for its fossil sites and dinosaur footprints, was left reeling by the deaths. Mass shootings are rare in Canada; the last major school shooting cited in public records occurred in Montreal in 1989, when 14 people died, and the country’s deadliest recent massacre was the 2020 Nova Scotia attacks, which left 22 people dead over two days.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing as the RCMP works to piece together the timeline and circumstances of the attack.
