Bumrah Back in Training, Abhishek Unwell: Crucial India Update
India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said Washington Sundar and Jasprit Bumrah were due to train Tuesday evening while Abhishek Sharma remained sidelined with a stomach issue ahead of India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup match against Namibia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Thursday. The announcement came after India beat the USA by 29 runs in their tournament opener at Wankhede Stadium, powered by captain Suryakumar Yadav’s unbeaten 84.
“Yes, Washi joined the team yesterday. He will train today. Abhi still has a few issues with his tummy. We hope that they will be available for the game in two days’ time,” ten Doeschate told reporters, adding that Bumrah would also bowl in training. “Booms will bowl today as well. He’s been ten days without bowling, but he’s feeling and moving a lot better. We will see how he goes in training today and tomorrow before getting on the field on Thursday.”
Washington rejoined the squad after nearly a month out following a side strain suffered while bowling in the ODI series against New Zealand in Vadodara in January. He completed rehabilitation and resumed practice at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru before being cleared to join the World Cup camp.
Bumrah missed the USA game with a viral fever, and Abhishek was absent from the second innings in Mumbai because of an upset stomach. In Bumrah’s absence, Mohammed Siraj-who had joined the squad as a replacement for the injured Harshit Rana-delivered a match-turning performance, claiming a three-wicket haul to help the defending champions secure the win.
Ten Doeschate praised Siraj’s readiness and impact but conceded that Siraj would likely lose his place if Bumrah is declared fit for the Namibia game. The team’s immediate focus, he said, was on careful monitoring in training over the next 48 hours to finalize the playing eleven.
India head into the Namibia clash buoyed by a strong opening performance but cautious over fitness issues that could influence selection. Final decisions on the playing XI will depend on how Sundar, Bumrah and Abhishek respond to training sessions in the run-up to the match.
