The Coimbatore Corporation has initiated a significant ₹202-crore project aimed at addressing sewage treatment and riverbank reinforcement along an 18.5-kilometer stretch of the Noyyal River, stretching from Perur–Chettipalayam to Pattanam Itteri Road. This multifaceted endeavor will incorporate the establishment of three sewage treatment plants (STPs), including one capable of processing four million litres per day (MLD) and two additional plants each with a capacity of three MLD. Planned sewage pumping stations and connecting pipelines will ensure the efficient transport of waste to these facilities.
However, the project has drawn criticism from environmental activists who argue that the proposed road construction and beautification efforts divert attention from the primary issue of sewage pollution affecting the river. R. Manikandan, founder of Kovai Kulangal Pathukaappu Amaippu, points out that while the Noyyal River naturally varies in width-expanding to approximately 300 feet in areas like Chithiraichavadi before narrowing to 60-80 feet within city limits-the addition of roadways and aesthetic enhancements risks constricting its width further. Manikandan emphasizes that such developments within the floodplain could obstruct natural flood flows and complicate groundwater recharge efforts.
K. Mohanraj, another environmental advocate, voices concerns about potential consequences for nearby agricultural land and the impending pressures of real estate development. “Building roads along the riverbanks could result in the degradation of riparian vegetation and significantly impact biodiversity in the region,” Mohanraj remarked. He suggested that rather than diverting funds towards the road constructions proposed in the project, financial resources should be allocated to improve existing roads in more critical areas of the city.
In response to the activists’ skepticism, a senior official from the Corporation addressed these concerns, asserting that the project is designed not to narrow the river. The official explained that measures have been implemented to remove existing encroachments along the banks, and boundary stones will be positioned to deter future violations. The proposed roadway, according to the official, will create a protective buffer, enhancing traffic flow and serving the public while safeguarding biodiversity.
As Coimbatore moves forward with this ambitious river development project, the balancing act between development and ecological preservation remains a poignant topic of discussion. Striking a harmony between infrastructural growth and environmental safeguards continues to be crucial, especially for the sustainable future of the Noyyal River and its surrounding ecosystems.
By addressing both the urgent need for effective sewage management and considering the ecological implications of infrastructural changes, Coimbatore’s efforts could serve as a model for responsible urban development.
