Breaking: Internet Ban Extended to Two More Districts After Unrest
The Manipur government on February 10 ordered a five-day suspension of all internet and data services in parts of Kangpokpi and Kamjong districts, effective from 5:30 pm the same day. The directive covers the entire revenue jurisdiction of the Lhungtin sub-division in Kangpokpi and the Phungyar sub-division in Kamjong, and expands earlier restrictions already in place in neighbouring Ukhrul district.
The state home department’s order suspends broadband, virtual private network (VPN) and VSAT connections across the specified areas. The measure was issued as a preventive step amid concerns about rapidly deteriorating conditions along the adjoining districts.
Authorities cited a “volatile law and order situation” and warned that anti‑social elements could misuse social media to circulate inflammatory images, posts and videos that might trigger public unrest. Officials also flagged the risk that false rumours spread via messaging apps, SMS and dongle services could spark serious disturbances.
In the order, home commissioner‑cum‑secretary N. Ashok Kumar expressed concern about possible loss of life and damage to public and private property, and warned of threats to public tranquillity and communal harmony.
The government invoked Rule 3 of the Temporary Suspension of Telecommunication Services Rules, 2024, and said the Governor of Manipur had approved the move after reviewing the situation. The department directed internet service providers, including Airtel, Vodafone Idea, Jio and BSNL, to comply immediately and warned that any violation would invite legal action.
