The Meghalaya government has initiated a Judicial Inquiry Commission to investigate a recent mining tragedy in the Mynsngat–Thangsko area of the East Jaintia Hills district, as announced by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma. The death toll from the incident has now risen to 27, of which six victims were from Assam, underscoring the cross-border implications and the ongoing migration of workers to illegal coal mining areas.
Many of the deceased were daily-wage laborers engaged in risky work conditions at the time of the incident. A blast followed by a cave-in at the illegal mining site prompted an extensive rescue and recovery operation, involving police, disaster response teams, and local authorities. Efforts to recover bodies continued over several days, complicated by challenging terrain and safety risks, with the possibility of additional victims still trapped earlier remaining a concern.
This incident has once again highlighted the enduring issue of illegal rat-hole coal mining in Meghalaya, despite long-standing prohibitions and repeated warnings regarding the associated dangers. In announcing the inquiry, Chief Minister Sangma stated that the commission will scrutinize the events leading to the tragedy, identify accountability lapses, and determine responsibility. The findings are anticipated to inform legal actions and policy reforms aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.
The government has pledged to seek justice for the families of the victims and to impose strict penalties on those responsible, as public outrage continues to intensify in response to the tragedy’s scale.
