Did Tarun Gogoi’s Son Betray Him? Insights from Pijush Hazarika
Assam Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika publicly criticized Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi in a social media post on February 8, following a press conference by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding the Special Investigation Team (SIT) report. Hazarika expressed that he was “deeply saddened” by the developments revealed after the Chief Minister’s briefing. He noted that shifts between political parties are common in politics, often influenced by ideology or leadership, recalling his own shift from Congress to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Despite his party switch, Hazarika maintained that he holds the late former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in high esteem. He addressed past criticisms he faced for leaving Congress, where he was accused of betraying Tarun Gogoi. However, he asserted that Gaurav Gogoi, Tarun’s son, was the one who had truly betrayed his father’s legacy.
In his post, Hazarika claimed that Gaurav Gogoi’s actions were contrary to the ideals and legacy of his father. He made further allegations regarding Gogoi’s family and personal choices, which he suggested were damaging to the reputation of the late Chief Minister. Hazarika alleged that Gaurav made all three family members “foreigners” and changed their religion, claiming that he had “turned into a minority within his own household.”
Questioning Gaurav Gogoi’s conduct, Hazarika stated, “What greater proof of betrayal can there be than this?” He concluded that had Tarun Gogoi been alive today, he would have been “the most heartbroken person in the world.”
