Tragic Loss: Sikkim Urologist Collapses at International Conference in Indore
A urologist from Sikkim, Dr. Tshering Doma Bhutia, tragically passed away in the early hours of Wednesday after collapsing during a presentation at the Urological Society of India Conference (USICON-2026) held in Indore. This sad news was confirmed by hospital sources.
On Saturday afternoon, while speaking at the conference, Dr. Bhutia suffered a medical emergency. Attendees quickly rushed to assist her, administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before she was transported to Life Care Hospital. Later, she was referred to Apollo Hospital for more advanced treatment.
Medical examinations revealed that Dr. Bhutia had a pre-existing brain aneurysm, a condition characterized by a weak spot in a blood vessel in the brain that can fill with blood and potentially rupture. In her case, the aneurysm ruptured suddenly, leading to severe internal bleeding and loss of consciousness.
After the incident, she was placed on ventilator support. Given her critical condition, plans were made to airlift her to Medanta Hospital in Mumbai; however, her family opted for Medanta Hospital in Indore instead. Despite ongoing medical care, she succumbed to her health issues on Wednesday.
Sources report that her body is being sent back to her hometown. Dr. Bhutia’s untimely passing has left the medical community in Sikkim in shock. Colleagues hailed her as a dedicated and promising urologist with a bright future ahead.
Sikkim’s Health Minister G.T. Dhungel expressed his condolences, highlighting Dr. Bhutia’s significant contributions to the medical field and noting that her death is a profound loss to the profession and the state.
